The Next Place - Limited Offer Book
All profits go to the American Red Cross
Our world has obviously changed this past week. But, this is a "call to action" for me and many other Educational Consultants in Discovery Toys.
I learned from the Columbine tragedies in the Littleton, CO area that we can make a difference. Therefore, I am offering you all the opportunity to donate a very special book to those affected by these recent tragedies. It is entitled, "The Next Place". It deals with loss/tragedy from a child's perspective. As a parent, I know how hard it is to talk about these issues with my boys. Let me include the description in the catalog: "Praised by grief counselors and Hospice volunteers, The Next Place offers an elegant, profound, even provocative portrayal of life after life that transcends both culture and denomination. Helps those who've lost a loved one (or who have been affected by loss) understand that our memories of love and joy live forever."
Here are words from one page: "The next place I go. . .There will be no room for darkness in that place of living light, where an ever-dawning morning pushes back the dying night. The very air will fill with brilliance, as the brightly shining sun. And the moon and half a million stars are married into one." This page is filled with stars, moons, and a brilliant light in the center of the page. Other pages have a rainbow, musical notes, a child's handprint, a cloud in the shape of a heart, leaves blowing across the page, the sky lit up in pink. As you can see, it's really poetry.
Consultants across the U.S. and Canada donated over 10,000 of these books to the
families affected by the Columbine shootings and I, with some help, distributed them.
I would like to reach out to help those affected by Tuesday's tragic events by asking
for your help once again. I am not looking to profit from this, obviously. The cost for
the book is $15.99 - it is a hard back book with a beautiful cover. My earnings will go
toward tax, and shipping to the Red Cross. If there are any funds left over, I will be
donating those to the Red Cross as well.
I am also looking for hostesses this fall who might be interested in donating all/part of their free toy credit in the form of toys/books/games to the children affected by recent events; and I'm looking for hostesses this Fall who might be interested in converting part/all of their free toy credit to cash and donating that to the Red Cross as well. Would you be interested in being one of these hostesses ("catalog hostesses" in other states can also participate by circulating DT catalogs)?
Keep in mind that play is very therapeutic for children right now. Many of you may have watched the Today show with Katie Couric a few mornings ago. The child development expert was talking about the importance of play for children in feeling safe. It is also how they express sadness/stress. He mentioned the importance of returning to a normal schedule and reading each night to your child/ren as you normally would as well. I could see the change in my boys' body language, tone of voice, etc. when we played one of our games the other night. It helped them relax and the transition to bedtime was very smooth. Our child development expert, Dr. Michael Meyerhoff, will be sharing his views on dealing with these issues with our children via our website I'm told in the coming weeks. I will copy this and send out to all of you.
If donating a book, or being a hostess this Fall is of interest to you: Please e-mail me/call me with your name, address, phone number, and what your interests are. You may charge your donation to any major credit card (processed by DT), or send me a check (normally checks are made out to me since I pay the company via my business charge card but if you're more comfortable making it out to Discovery Toys, that's fine).
Thank you for being a part of the effort to combat the suffering going on right now and bring some comfort. I appreciate you.
". . . stand beside her and guide her in the night with the light up above."
